Russian Man Detained Over LGBTQ+ Chats Faces Threats and Abuse

A Russian man was reportedly detained and beaten because of his participation in LGBTQ+ online chats, according to information published by SK SOS Crisis Group. Human rights activists say the man faced threats of criminal prosecution, intimidation, and pressure to identify other gay men connected to online communities.

The case highlights growing fears among LGBTQ+ people in Russia and the North Caucasus, where activists report increasing surveillance, harassment, and criminalization targeting queer communities — especially after Russian authorities intensified anti-LGBTQ+ policies in recent years.

Detained for LGBTQ+ Online Communication

According to activists, the man was allegedly targeted after authorities gained access to LGBTQ+ group chats and private online communication. Human rights defenders claim he was physically assaulted during detention and threatened with extremist-related charges unless he cooperated with security forces.

Activists say authorities attempted to pressure him into revealing information about other gay men and LGBTQ+ contacts. Similar tactics have reportedly been used in previous crackdowns involving online communities, dating apps, and private messaging groups.

Growing Risks for LGBTQ+ People in Russia

Since Russia expanded restrictions connected to the so-called “international LGBT movement,” LGBTQ+ Russians and activists say fear has intensified both online and offline. Human rights organizations warn that ordinary social activity — including participation in chats, support groups, or dating communities — may now expose people to serious risks.

Organizations including SK SOS Crisis Group continue helping LGBTQ+ people flee persecution, access emergency housing, and relocate to safer regions or countries. The group has documented cases involving torture, blackmail, forced confinement, and threats against LGBTQ+ individuals across the North Caucasus and Russia.

Online Spaces Becoming Increasingly Dangerous

Digital communication has become one of the few ways many LGBTQ+ people in conservative regions can safely connect with others. However, activists warn that online chats and social platforms are increasingly monitored or infiltrated by authorities and extremist groups.

Human rights defenders recommend stronger digital safety practices, including encrypted communication, anonymous accounts, and limiting personal information shared in public or semi-private LGBTQ+ groups.

Human Rights Groups Continue Emergency Support

Human Rights Groups Continue Emergency Support

Despite increasing pressure, LGBTQ+ advocacy organizations continue operating emergency support systems for people facing violence or detention. Activists say international attention remains critical for protecting vulnerable individuals and documenting abuses connected to anti-LGBTQ+ crackdowns.
