Trump’s Big Beautiful Pool Is Turning Into a Swamp
President Donald Trump promised that Washington’s iconic Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool would be transformed into a cleaner, more beautiful landmark ahead of America’s 250th birthday celebrations. Instead, just days after a $14 million makeover was completed, the pool is once again making headlines for all the wrong reasons.
The renovation was ambitious. The pool was drained, resurfaced, waterproofed, and painted what Trump called “American Flag Blue.” Officials also installed new water-treatment technology intended to finally defeat the algae problems that have plagued the reflecting pool for decades.
But Mother Nature had other plans.
Within days of reopening, green algae returned to the water, turning large portions of the pool murky and discolored. Satellite analysis found algae levels higher than any June measurement recorded during the previous five years. Crews were quickly dispatched to skim, vacuum, and chemically treat the water in an effort to restore the pool’s intended appearance.
The problems didn’t stop there.
Visitors and photographers soon noticed peeling blue coating and paint flakes appearing beneath the water’s surface. What was supposed to be a showcase project instead became a symbol of rushed execution and unexpected consequences.
Supporters of the project argue that algae has been a recurring issue for more than a century and that previous multimillion-dollar renovations also failed to eliminate the problem permanently. Government officials have said the current algae bloom is related to dormant material in supply lines and that new treatment systems will ultimately solve the issue.
Critics see something different: a costly makeover that focused on appearances rather than underlying environmental realities. The shallow, sunlit pool creates ideal conditions for algae growth, and experts have warned that no amount of paint or technology can completely eliminate a problem rooted in nature itself.
The irony is hard to miss. A project designed to create a picture-perfect reflecting pool for Independence Day celebrations has instead become a national spectacle of green water, algae blooms, and peeling paint.
Whether the cleanup efforts ultimately succeed remains to be seen. For now, Trump’s “big beautiful pool” is reflecting something very different than intended — not a crystal-clear monument, but a reminder that some problems are far more complicated than a fresh coat of paint.
